![]() When writing an Embellisher, it’s helpful to keep in mind how someone may want to invent a fiction to deal with a harsh, unforgiving reality. The embellishment here is to give Edward Bloom a final sense of catharsis before passing away. Even when reading the screenplay, there’s no hint Verbal is lying because such details are so minuscule. The film utilizes a simple framing device - Verbal Kint confessing everything he knows about his crew and the crimes they’ve committed. You can read the full screenplay to see how this flawed narrator reads on the page. The reason for the deception is clear, and perhaps the best example of it is The Usual Suspects. You may see it in films like Gone Girl or Wonderland where a character has committed a crime and needs to avoid authorities. This is a narrator who deceives the audience and/or other characters to save his or her own skin. The first type of narrator we’ll look at is someone who lies for obvious reasons: the Self-Preservationist. WHAT IS AN UNRELIABLE NARRATOR? So how can you make a fallible narrator that doesn’t feel too gimmicky? After all, you want to showcase the characteristics of an unreliable narrator without giving too much away at the very beginning.

Down to the hardware For $100 less you don’t get a nice aluminum back. However, I’m planning on keeping a Kindle around-and Calibre and its associated DeDRM plugin make it relatively easy for me to download old Kindle purchases and load them on a Kobo. Really, Amazon’s greatest advantage over Kobo is that I’ve got years of book purchases locked up in Amazon’s proprietary, DRM-encoded format. Amazon has improved a lot of its maddening typography features over the years-forced justification being perhaps its greatest sin-but Kobo’s still ahead.īoth services let you buy books from their online stores. Kindle fonts seem jagged compared to Kobo fonts. I can’t tell how much of the Kindle’s poor text handling is its operating system and how much is its selection of typefaces, but type just looks better on the Kobo. The other superior feature of the Kobo is typography. Using Libby got me using library ebooks once in a while, but using a Kobo has made it a regular habit. If you check out ebooks from the library, or might consider doing so, the Kobo’s simply better. There’s no Overdrive interface on the Kindle itself. You need to check out a book on the web or in Libby, then click to send the book to, then click on to send the book to your Kindle. While Kindles will work with Overdrive, it’s a circuitous process. You can see your Overdrive queue and return books, all from the device itself. If I’ve checked out a book elsewhere-say, via the excellent Libby app, the book will download automatically the next time the device syncs to the network. Unsurprisingly, Kobo connects well with Overdrive, allowing me to browse and check out books directly on the device. Many libraries will let you borrow ebooks using Overdrive, a service that’s a part of the same company that owns Kobo. But in a few areas, it’s clearly superior. The software on the Kobo is, as you might expect, quite similar to that on the Kindle. Still, how is it possible that the Kindle didn’t let you use the cover of the book you’re currently reading as the screen saver image until April 2021?! More library books are coming to my Kobo soon. I’ve been using Kindles since the beginning, and the pace of Kindle software innovation is quite slow, though it’s actually shown a bit of improvement over the last few years. And while the Libra H2O is made of less premium materials than my old favorite, the Kindle Oasis, it also costs $100 less. It was just idle checking, I swear, and that’s why it took a couple of weeks for me to buy a Kobo Libra H2O.Īfter reading a few books on the Kobo, I’m prepared to declare that I actually prefer the Kobo to the Kindle. And that was when-as you do-I popped over to Kobo’s website to see what their current crop of ereaders looked like. The Kobo, a 2016-vintage Aura One, offered a few features that the Kindle didn’t, and I liked the idea of putting a mostly-unloved device to work at something it was good at.Īt some point I noticed a big gouge in the screen, probably a legacy of a school trip my daughter took a few years ago. This past year I’ve been spending more time reading books on a Kobo ereader, rather than on my Kindle. The Kobo Libra H2O is $100 less than the similar Kindle Oasis. The rarity of the item, coupled with the significance of owning a Party Hat as a status symbol for players who had been with the game since the beginning, saw demand soar. However, those that held onto their Party Hats of the years became the elite few and the hats themselves became an investment. The hats were introduced as a festive novelty cosmetic item and intended to be worthless and disposable as they didn’t provide the wearer any benefits or stat bonuses, leading to many players immediately discarding them. The original Party Hats were exclusively available to players two decades ago in RuneScape’s 2001 Christmas event. After the cut-off date, they will never be available to earn again! A different player on the RuneScape forum said they killed "2,000 abyssal demons" without seeing a Combat Shard drop, while another reported that they got the Combat Shard after fighting dark beasts for six hours. That hasn't stopped some players from trying to grind out Shard drops as soon as they can, such as by spending a morning cooking thousands of sailfish. "Essentially, it's our intent that players who are actively playing throughout this event will be able to create their own hat without too much worry." "As you continue to train a skill or complete clue scrolls, the likelihood of getting a shard grows exponentially," says the developer. Jagex says that a "bad luck protection" system should prevent anyone who's actively playing RuneScape from being left hatless before the event ends on January 3. Others are random drops that occur while players are training skills or engaging in other activities. (Membership can also be purchased with Bonds, which are tradable in-game items like EVE Online's Plex.) Some shards are acquired by completing discrete tasks, such as finishing the 'Once Upon a Time in Gielinor' anniversary quest or buying one for 30 million gold. To get a Golden Party Hat, players must collect eight Golden Party Hat Shards and have an active RuneScape membership, which is $11 monthly, or less for players who commit to a 12-month Premier Club membership. Each player can only earn one Golden Party Hat during the event, so they will still be rare, but players aren't likely to toss their hats out this time. (Correction: Actually they were pink, not purple, a player tells me, but the color was changed in response to a duplication glitch.) The Golden Party Hat will be a symbol of a player's participation in RuneScape's 20th anniversary event, or something to trade, although they won't automatically be as valuable as the originals.
